The core of Kyoto vintage. Shops stack floor over floor, from the Teramachi and Shinkyogoku arcades up to the second and third storeys of backstreet walk-ups. The density — a chain store next door to a one-person selection — is the point.

Hankyu Kyoto-Kawaramachi
The southern belt running into the Shijo shopping district. Heavy on large chains and cheap volume, so it works as the closing stretch after Sanjo.
